There is more! Five tilt-up systems.

4.

“Tilt-up” can mean several different opening mechanisms. Here are some other examples!

6.

Bonnet & trunk

5.

The bonnet hinges do not use dampers, but they are built extremely robustly.

7.

The bonnet and trunk open in opposite directions! This EJ1 combines a bonnet that opens diagonally from the windshield side with a trunk that opens sideways...

8.

...and the clever part is that each opens in a different direction. Both are supported at a single point, so their hinge mounts are built very solidly.

12.

The rear trunk is equally robust. It must support not only the weight of the hatch itself but also the GT wing.

Along with the tilt-up system, the interior has been customized with a monitor console and other imaginative touches.

Bonnet

16.

After opening the bonnet, a cover with a cutout for the headlight is fitted…

15.

The EJ1 has other dramatic custom work besides tilt-up, including an MRS-style front end. It is surprising that everything is home-built!

Civic Wait, how does this work?

23.

A bonnet that opens like French doors

24.

This setup was spotted at a US show…

27.

The bonnet opens in French-door fashion. What is remarkable about the American builder’s idea is that it is split 60/40, like a seat, rather than down the middle.

22.

At first glance, it is hard to tell how this system works.

25.

In fact, a link arm with hinges on both sides is fitted at the windshield. It looks complicated, but the mechanism is surprisingly simple. This is the kind of custom work that wins on ingenuity.

29.

A Japanese builder would almost certainly make it symmetrical, but this one is split 60/40. In many ways, people over there really are something else.

26.

From the front, the angle is even more apparent. It is interesting—or maybe it just looks “misaligned”?

28.

That may be how it looks.

50.

A gate with built-in dampers!

47.

The gate carries two extra wing panels, adding substantial weight, so two reinforced dampers support it. It opens surprisingly easily.

52.

Built by Garage Tiara: an EJ1.

51.

This EJ1 was built by Garage Tiara. The bodywork is impressive, but the sideways-opening trunk gate is spectacular! The Dangar Racing two-piece GT wing also adds a serious amount of weight.

44.

The smoothed rear hatch, taillights, and license-plate pocket are all part of the show-car finish.

45.

Opens vertically

49.

One style that has become common lately is…

48.

This type of trunk gate opens straight up. Apparently, once you make the brackets and latches, it is fairly simple to build. The visual impact is enormous!
