  12. …we said, “Let's make it that far!” We didn't have a real strategy, but since it was our first time at this circuit, we decided to focus on looking coordinated rather than aggressive. After watching D1 and Ikaten videos, we'd initially said, “Bihoku's Turn 1 calls for a clutch kick!” But when we tried matching our runs in practice, we were all over the place, so we quickly abandoned that and switched to handbrake entries. That might have reduced the spectacle a little, but I think it helped us coordinate well. The reason we won? Tire choice. While practicing together in a parking lot a week before the event, we noticed that different tires produced completely different speeds and distances after the rear slid out. So all three of us chose the same tire model.

  38. Takagi, the most consistent driver, led. Kunisada was second: he wasn't always consistent, but was strong when it counted. I drove third. I had no worries about Takagi, but since Kunisada still had some inconsistency, you could say our result depended on how well he was driving. Before we ran, we didn't expect to win, but actually winning proved that all our efforts hadn't been wasted. I'm really happy!

  48. All three cars have SR engines! Takagi's Skyline also has an SR swap, so they all use the same engine. Only leader Hosono's engine is completely stock—even the boost hasn't been increased—while the other two have upgraded turbos. Hosono, also the team mechanic, was pushing the other two hard from the back! [A few OCR name/component fragments require source review.]

  51. Winners
  52. Was matching the tires the secret to victory? Different tire brands gave the three cars different distances after initiating a slide, so they all chose Federal SS595s. “Cheap, no tread blocks flying off, and decent grip”—apparently ideal for students.
