What is remarkable about this 180SX is that it has survived while competing in events for so long. It is neither merely preserved as a running car nor built into some wildly over-the-top machine. It still has plates, has the specs to win events, and keeps going. The know-how accumulated over 17 years can be called the ‘Sugano style.’ He even rents a dedicated garage because he wants to take good care of the 180SX—that is impressive too!

He has kept the original new-car invoice, which even lists the chassis number, along with the 180SX owner's manual. Before the 180SX he drove an AE86 that was still running, and traded it in for just ¥1,000! ‘I didn't think anything of it at the time, but I could have sold it for a lot now,’ Sugano says, with a little regret.
