May 12, 1983—that was the birthday of the AE86 Levin/Trueno, nicknamed the Hachiroku. It combined a lightweight, compact FR chassis with the high-revving DOHC 4A-G engine. The Hachiroku came as a 2-door or 3-door. Grades included the slightly more luxurious G Apex with power steering, the 3-door-only G, and a lower-priced 2-door G. The GTV was positioned as the sport model, with firmer dampers and higher-rate springs as standard, plus a quicker steering ratio. There are several ways to identify the model year. Minor changes are sometimes divided into phases 1, 2, and 3, but the simple distinction between early and late models is usually sufficient. On early Levin models, the GTV had a horizontally stretched grille; the GT Apex had a grille that opened and closed according to water temperature...
