Sports injection is often hard to explain, so people ask, ‘What is it?’ Put simply, a 20-valve 4A-G is one kind of sports-injection setup. Like a carbureted engine, it has four throttles to improve response, while the ECU uses sensors to control the engine and reduce sensitivity to air pressure and temperature. In other words, it combines the best features of carburetors and ordinary fuel injection. The key to sports injection is ECU tuning; the next part of the article compares it to choosing main jets on a carburetor…
The carburetors are known to be easy for beginners to handle. Paired with an engine built without spending a great deal, they make this an approachable carbureted setup. ‘With a carbureted car, it can be fast or slow depending on the tuning and driving technique. That is the fun of it,’ says representative Mr. Kokubo. For someone who wants to start with carburetors, this setup lets them experience the carburetor world fully.

A Trueno with Aimec Sports injection specification
A serious naturally aspirated build targeting 200 PS!
The four individual throttle bodies are SK Sanyo 45 mm units. The engine uses 304° intake and 288° exhaust high-lift cams, with a fully tuned head and bottom end, for a stated 200 PS. (Editor’s note: What a monster! It is a shame they did not show the engine itself.)
Four individual throttles
The original ECU's rev limiter is set to 8,500 rpm, and the fuel and ignition maps have been revised across nearly the entire rev range.
