An AE101 or AE111 20-valve engine does not simply drop into an AE86. First, the distributor interferes with the bulkhead, so a simultaneous-ignition kit is used to relocate it. The cooling system also needs changes: the water pump is at the rear on these engines, so the pipes must be routed to the front. It is easiest to keep the AE86 harness, and the ECU must either be reprogrammed or replaced with a full-control unit.

20-valve full tune…
At a glance, the intake looks carbureted, but it is just the stock cover with velocity stacks fitted.
If the distributor is disabled, a new sensor must be installed to pick up the engine-speed signal from the crank pulley.
It looks stock on the outside, but it has the latest 4A-G inside. Don't underestimate this car!
The AE111 20-valve normally has a rev limit around 8,500 rpm, but this engine revs beyond that. The full-scale tachometer on the instrument panel gives that impression.
The key to a 20-valve swap tune!

What will Hachiroku tuning look like in the 21st century?
Engine swaps are one way to achieve more power in the Hachiroku, and fitting a 20-valve engine has practically become standard. Even if you extensively modify the early 4A-G, gaining more power costs a great deal. As tuning trends toward higher output, the body, suspension, and brakes will become increasingly important to match it.
In terms of engine power, the goal is to reach the level of a VTEC-equipped Integra Type R, using a 20-valve…
