About this issue
The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.
242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

I keep checking Young Version but can’t find his Skyline. I even got a manual license so I could drive it, but we broke up. I hope his Skyline appears in the magazine. Hirotsu-chan, send in your cool R33 and show everyone! Be careful on mountain roads. I’ll save up and buy a car too. (Osaka City, “Okonomiyaki Kansha”) / Matsugon: I’d like to see the R33 too! What car are you planning to buy?
Hello, editors. I’m writing for the first time. I recently got a job at a Nissan dealership. A senior recommended Young Version, which I’ve read for two or three years. I’ve gradually modified my 180SX. I wanted to work for Nissan, but with few offers, I compared other dealers and chose one that seemed proactive. I don’t regret it. I won’t sell my 180SX, so I’ll need another work car and the expense, but I’ll do my best and keep reading.
Hello, editors. I’m “Machiyako,” from the September issue two years ago. I’m still happily dating the street racer I met then, and we’re almost at our second anniversary. I’ve been reading Young Version for two years! I’ll keep buying every issue. This year I hope to visit circuits with my boyfriend. P.S. Tsukun, please keep maintaining Lukino and me!

Riding my ex-boyfriend’s beloved car…
…was the reason, but…
Hello, Young Version editors. I’m “Ptarō,” 20. I learned about Young Version because my ex-boyfriend read it. We have broken up, but he drives my favorite Skyline. He modified the muffler, wheels and side/rear aero, and planned to send it in after changing the front aero, wing and grille…
For her and everyone…

I’m a 21-year-old office worker driving a Prelude EG6. I made some reckless modifications and am broke, but I love the car. Now it feels like wasted potential…
I moved away from home for a new job. I have no friends here…

Please send me a sticker!! (Tadahide Aratani, Kasuya District, Fukuoka)
I don’t have a girlfriend or anyone to drive with. There are no young people at work. I want to change this! I barely know the mountain roads, and alone I don’t know the rules or manners. Will someone go driving with me?
The neighbor’s older brother…
What car did he buy!?
Hello, editors. I’m a first-year high-school student and expect my first part-time paycheck soon. Recently a neighbor bought a car. You might be surprised: it’s set up for drifting…
It’s an S12 Silvia, apparently bought cheaply from an aunt…
So, I want to start a team.
Any naturally aspirated car is welcome. We’d prefer members around the same age, but beginners and experienced racers alike are welcome. Let’s have fun driving, choose the team name together, and go to mountain roads, circuits and tours. Any gender or car model welcome.

Hisaga 308…
It’s rusty and making lots of strange noises. He says he’ll fix it, but we’ll see…
For your first drift-practice car, just drive it. A less popular model can stand out and look cool! I’m looking forward to your tuning.
Because of my budget, Q’s…
But I’ll modify it!
I finally got my own car: a PS13 Silvia Q’s. I wanted a K’s but could only afford a Q’s. It has a 0.5-liter bolt-on turbo; someday I’ll make it as powerful as a K’s, S14 or S15. It’s pearl white as I hoped, so…
(LEO, Kishiwada City, Osaka)
A turbo kit is available now, too, and aftermarket aero makes the job fun. It may be tough, but we’re cheering for you!
I’m going to modify it a lot! (WILD BEAST, Sapporo, Hokkaido) Bolt-on turbos for Q’s are also available from Zenitani Motor—enjoy it! Look forward to your sticker.
