About this issue
The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.
242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

This S15 has a newly developed front lower-arm bar. A strut-tower bar in the engine bay also increases rigidity at the front of the body. The suspension additionally gets Esta Sports Links: front tension rods and lower arms, plus rear upper links I and II and lower arms. It also carries the full set of parts that define Mine's light-tuning approach: VX-ROM, front pipe, Stainless Converter PRO catalyst adapter, Silence VX exhaust, and VX air filter. The usual Öhlins-based suspension is present, but this demo car uses the more aggressive Esta Suspension Professional Edition. With the setup explained, let's drive it. The engine is unquestionably superb—it feels like a large-displacement naturally aspirated car [continued on the next page].

Suspension that bites firmly into the road.
Monster grip with Esta Sports Links!
The quality of the suspension is apparent on a wet circuit. This S15 Silvia represents the first step in Mine's street-tuning program.
The main changes are intake and exhaust parts, suspension, and a little body reinforcement. Some of you may be wondering, “What exactly is a little body reinforcement?”

It has a flat aluminum roll bar whose appearance alone suggests it will work well. The price is ten-thousand yen plus ¥3,500; verify the photograph before relying on this amount.
The sharp response feels great!
Esta's Professional Edition, likely to be a strong ally on both circuit and street, is scheduled for release soon. The front lower-arm bar should firmly improve front-end rigidity, and its affordable ¥15,000 price is appealing too.
