About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

The naturally aspirated-style exhaust note is another selling point.

11.

A drift car should stand out, and its sound has to be cool too! Kazama Auto's S15 produces a high-pitched exhaust note almost like a naturally aspirated engine. Its distinctive

large-diameter exhaust layout apparently contributes considerably. The heat-colored exhaust manifold is from GP Sports, with a front pipe from . A GP Sports all-stainless EXAS Spec II exhaust is fitted. A GT2835 turbo conversion is planned next.

An extremely low stance is part of the formula too!

47.

On Silvia models, the wiring harness runs inside the driver's-side front fender and may be cut when the car is driven low. Kazama's S15 addresses this by rerouting it through the engine bay.

56.

The coilovers' movable lower brackets let them retain ample suspension travel while achieving a seriously lowered appearance.

52.

being able to keep driving lap after lap is obviously better! The suspension uses Kei Office S14 Airfolg Kei coilovers, because no S15 version was available when the car arrived. Surprisingly, the balance is not bad,

not only for drifting but for grip driving too.

But as an initial first step, this approach to building a drift car should offer plenty of useful ideas for us too!
