About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

Eighty percent of engine wear is caused by dry starts. A routine morning start may seem harmless, but the engine definitely wears a little each time. That is because the oil is in the sump, not yet on the engine’s lubricated surfaces. When you start the engine, there is a “danger period” while the oil pump draws oil up and circulates it throughout the engine. During that time, the moving surfaces rub against each other like sandpaper. This is called a dry start. The ad claims that 80% of engine deterioration is caused by dry starts, and that one dry start causes more wear than driving about 600 km (roughly Tokyo to Osaka). .

22.

The ad claims SX-8000 Engine Treatment forms a durable, very slippery PTFE film on internal engine friction surfaces. It says this film protects internal parts and prevents dry grinding during startup. According to the advertisement, testing at Southwest Research Institute in the United States using ASTM Sequence IIIE demonstrated up to an 88% reduction in engine wear, and the coating protects the engine for up to 80,000 km. [Claims are reproduced from the source and not independently verified].

…PTFE, described in the ad as a synthetic solid with one of the lowest friction coefficients. It claims the coated surfaces slide against each other like “wet ice on wet ice.” Benefits claimed include improved engine output, especially midrange torque, easier starting, and better fuel economy. SX-8000 is described as a coating treatment that lasts 80,000 km after one application. Try the highly lubricating world of PTFE for yourself. .
