About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

From outside, I thought the car might bounce quite a bit while driving. But once I rode in it, it hardly bounced at all. I was surprised how well it absorbed bumps and settled down. The ride is comfortable, and it holds firmly through corners. Both the front and rear stay planted. I prefer a firm suspension, so this felt a little soft to me, but it was supple and the shocks seemed to be working properly.

This setup is aimed at intermediate to advanced drivers and suits anyone who wants to enjoy grip driving on mountain roads. It has a slight understeer tendency and turns in smoothly rather than snapping sharply. That makes this setup a little difficult for drifting, though adjusting the camber should make it work. Radial tires are the best match. At ¥170,000, it's genuinely inexpensive for this performance—a great value.
