About this issue
The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.
242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

…and avoid cheap parallel-import oils, which some shops may carry. If you want your engine to last, don’t risk them. We recommend HKS Super Turbo Racing. It’s sufficient except for extreme use, such as dozens of consecutive circuit laps. More important is following good driving habits: don’t accelerate until oil pressure stabilizes, let the engine idle after hard use, keep track of the oil level, and avoid dubious additives.
Even in tuned cars and demanding situations like circuit driving, Honda’s genuine oil has consistently given us the best results. If you have a Type R, the engine tends to consume oil, so a thinner 5W-30 may be a good choice. Honda engines can generally tolerate oil temperatures around 140°C. Change the oil every 3,000–5,000 km, or after circuit use. We’re currently developing our own engine oil—look forward to it!

For a rotary engine, a dedicated oil is best…
…the best choice is a rotary-specific oil. As you know, oil is burned inside a rotary engine. Other oils can leave combustion deposits that harden like coal tar (called carbon lock). If that happens, the engine may not start and the only remedy is an overhaul. Dedicated oil is formulated to leave no such deposits. Change it every 3,000–4,000 km.
