About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

Even NA-car owners will want this turbo timer! Think a turbo timer has nothing to do with your naturally aspirated car? Think again: this Multi-Speed Turbo Timer is packed with features that NA drivers will enjoy. Switch the display to speed mode, floor the accelerator, and it shows your speed in real time—up to 390 km/h (OCR unit is unclear). That can be useful for cars with the speed limiter removed. It can also store top speed and lets you set a speed…

When the preset speed is reached, a beep sounds and the display background turns red to alert you. It can also time quarter-mile runs and measure elapsed times for 0–200/1000 m and 0–100/200/300 m (the printed units are unclear). It sounds fun whether you drive a turbo or NA car! The turbo-timer function is also fully featured: besides manual operation, it has an automatic mode that calculates the after-idle time for you. The blue display backlight is so beautiful it is a shame we cannot show it in color here. It is great that all these features come at the same price!
