Local drivers in Chiba told us about a good shop, so we went to see it and asked president Takeishi about brake pads. “We modify the way stock pads bite to meet each customer’s needs. We can also make pads matched to your driving. Please allow about two months for data collection and fabrication.” garage TAKES is a direct-run SUNOCO oil shop; it also sells tires, wheels, and used parts at good prices. “Our motto is to enjoy your car. Customers can join in the work too.” They specialize in the AE86, but welcome questions about any car.

A setup that bites late in the pedal stroke

4.

This pad has both sides trimmed away, like some commercially available pads. The principle is the same: a pad that bites farther down the pedal travel lets you control braking more easily, though debris may also get caught more readily.

16.

A setup that bites immediately

13.

As you can see in the photo, the lower part of the pad is cut at an angle. This reduces the contact area with the disc rotor, producing a strong initial bite when you brake. It is particularly suited to locking the rear wheels.

Noise-prevention setup

19.

New pads with sharp corners tend to squeal. These pads have every corner trimmed to prevent noise. Don’t assume squealing is unavoidable; it may be worth filing the corners of new pads.
