Team Battles
“That’s a sedan, that’s COOL ‘D’!!” Tomoki Sasaoka Toyota
Sagamihara, Kanagawa
▲ Exhaust by Summit Racing. This Sasaoka’s Tourer V also wears a variety of Summit Racing one-off parts. The white body is the factory color, dressed with Suzuki Garage’s full aero kit and lowered on JIC coilovers. It looks this good without a repaint—no wonder sedans are attracting so much attention…
JZX90 Chaser (1994 model)
SPECIFICATIONS: JIC coilovers; Summit Racing original exhaust; computer; Suzuki Garage full aero kit; imitation Equip wheels (front 8J-17, +30; rear 9J-17, +40); tires OCR’d as “Taya F RE710,” 215/45R17; TRD differential; M’s air cleaner; Earl’s oil cooler.
You can see why.
The owner used to drive an S13 Silvia. He prefers a larger car,
He likes it so much that his next target is a Y33 Cima—and of course it’ll be a five-speed drift car…
FC3S set up for quarter-mile runs, aiming for an 11-second pass
▲ The large-diameter exhaust is by Altezza
“The theme is to keep it from looking like a street-racing car.” Murakoshi Toyota JZX81 Mark II
Sagamihara, Kanagawa
(1992 model)
The JZX81 Mark II was built around the idea of not looking like a street racer, even though it is set up for drifting. COOL ‘D’ is an enormously popular team, and sedans really suit them. (The crew initially seemed a little intimidating!?)
With so many JZX90 Tourer Vs around, he deliberately chose this earlier-generation car
He says his next car may be a Majesta, built for drifting.
and converted it from automatic to manual, as a street racer would.
SPECIFICATIONS: Equip wheels (front 7.5J-16, +40; rear 8J-16, +33); JIC coilovers (front 12 kg, rear 10 kg); automatic-to-manual conversion; TRD LSD and heavy-duty clutch; iRacing 100 mm exhaust; Nardi 36 steering wheel; two Bride bucket seats; EC Works aero mirrors.
Higashiyamato, Tokyo Mazda
Masahiro Watanabe
FC3S RX-7 (1991 model)
Mr. Watanabe is laughing as he sits in the engine bay, while Mr. Kashiwagi—the first person featured—bows his head in admiration. Could Watanabe be his mentor?
▲ The interior has been cleaned up beautifully
This FC3S is aiming for an 11-second pass in the quarter-mile—
It’s built for quarter-mile runs. White piping from the intercooler stands out in the engine bay; the 13B is a side-port-tuned setup.
▲ The piping for the RE Amemiya intercooler is especially noticeable
SPECIFICATIONS: RSV tires; BBS wheels; 13B side-port engine; T04S turbo; RE Amemiya three-layer intercooler; GT-R fuel pump; HKS AIC and EVC; Personal Green steering wheel; Altezza exhaust; and more.
