  44. Road Star Hokuriku: third Car Play 2003 event
  45. In Hokuriku, without a major circuit nearby, track days using ski-resort parking lots have lately become common. A ski resort in summer sounds odd, but a large area where you can drive freely with a low entry fee and little concern about crashing sounds ideal! How are these events run, and what sort of drivers attend? To investigate the region’s drifting scene, we visited Road Star Hokuriku’s gymkhana-style drift track day, Car Play 2003.
  46. Date: Sunday, August 24. Venue: IOX-AROSA ski resort. Organizer: Road Star Hokuriku, 076-252-8000 (Kanazawa East store). Entries: 40 cars. Entry fee: ¥7,000.
  47. Two laps per turn, with a relaxed day waiting your turn. A course where you reach third gear is perfect for releasing stress! This is the parking lot at IOX-AROSA ski resort, right on the Ishikawa–Toyama border. The cone course is surprisingly spacious. The showpiece turn nearest the spectators can definitely be taken in third gear and looks enjoyable. One drawback is the site rule…
  48. …that cars cannot enter the course simultaneously…
  49. …so cars take turns one at a time, gymkhana style. On the other hand, queuing whenever you like may make it very relaxed for entrants. You can change settings or tires without rushing. There were only 40 entries, and turns lasted two laps, so waiting was hardly unbearable. Even those driving less probably managed ten attempts. Judging by the number plates, about 70% were from Ishikawa and the rest from Toyama. Silvia and 180SX models made up roughly half the field, followed by Cefiro, Laurel and Skyline. Conversely, there were only two AE86s and one RX-7. Unusual cars such as Starlets, Altos, Carinas and Coronas also stood out. Overall, their driving favored showmanship over competition: leave rigid concerns about lines and entry techniques aside…
