Since its founding in April 1972, JAWA (Japan Light Alloy Wheel Association) has worked to ensure wheel safety and reliability. It uses three strength tests based on Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism standards, plus a second check by the Japan Vehicle Inspection Association. Aluminum wheels that pass receive a JAWA certification sticker. Since April 2011, JAWA has recommended strength tests about 20% stricter than JWL for certified members.

JAWA quality certification sticker
JAWA member companies apply strict quality controls to their disc wheels. When buying wheels, look for the trusted quality certification. JAWA recommends even tougher strength tests for members who meet these requirements.
A series of rigorous tests
JAWA quality certificate 999X000019R. This wheel has passed the strength tests required by the Ministry’s technical standards for light-alloy disc wheels and is registered with VIA.

Only products that pass these rigorous tests may display the quality certificate. JAWA-certified products pass the strict JWL, JWL-T, and VIA strength tests. Certified member wheels carry the JAWA quality label.
Checks rim durability
Radial-load durability test
A tire-mounted disc wheel is installed as on a vehicle and rotated on a drum under radial load: 500,000 rotations for JWL and 1,000,000 for JWL-T. Inspectors check for cracks, severe deformation, and loose lug nuts.
Check!
Even stricter strength tests recommended!
JAWA-recommended strength test
Checks tire air retention and the strength of the rim, disc, and joints
Impact test
A tire-mounted wheel is fixed to a test rig at 13° for JWL or 30° for JWL-T from vertical. A weight is dropped onto the rim flange to check for through-cracks, separation of the rim and disc, and air leakage.
