The GTI-R is a Heisei-era car. Nissan launched it in 1989 to pursue World Rally Championship success, just like the Lancer Evolution and Impreza. It came only as a three-door hatchback, the lightest body with the shortest rear overhang. Its SR20DET is basically the turbo engine used in the Bluebird, but it adds individual throttle bodies, enlarged and straightened intake ports, and cooling-channel pistons. The intercooler is more than twice as large, and its 230 PS made it one of the most powerful 2.0-liter models of its day...

The engine is basically stock, including its cams, though the valve timing has been changed. It uses a Nismo GT-R fuel pump and 700 cc injectors. Many GTI-Rs have been driven hard, so anyone buying one used should bring its condition up to standard.

The GTI-R has a cramped engine bay, so only compact turbos fit, such as the GT turbo or the A'PEXi AX turbo (53B70) on this car. The AX uses a ball bearing and begins building boost at 3,000 rpm, with excellent response.
