The Hachi-Roku remains hugely popular, especially on mountain passes. The question with the latest tuning is whether to go for an inexpensive but difficult-to-set-up turbo, or perfect a naturally aspirated setup that brings out the car’s original character. So here is a showdown: Tarzan drives TEC-ARTS’ Trueno with a twin-scroll turbo, while Orido drives Techno-Pro Spirits’ “Spirits Kotaro.”

17.

The turbo representative is a TEC-ARTS Trueno with a bolt-on turbo on the stock engine. The aim is to keep costs down while gaining power. They chose an S14 twin-scroll turbo to reduce cost. It boosts strongly from low revs and pulls well at the top, making it pleasant from street to circuit, says Mr. Kamata of TEC-ARTS. Earlier bolt-on turbos were said to break easily, but that is no longer a problem. Mechanical tuning can cost around ¥10,000 per horsepower, while a turbo setup is much cheaper. An Evo III intercooler also helps reduce cost.

25.

Boost rises as the revs climb…

24.

If you can keep it in the power band, you get a feeling an NA car cannot offer—and it is a lot of fun.

29.

It is basically circuit-oriented, but it works well on the highway and at top speed, too.

31.

One thing that caught my attention was how surprisingly gentle the boost came on…

28.

If you can make it work like an extension of your own hands and feet, it is very quick.

30.

The small displacement is a limitation, but I would have liked a little more punch. Still, this Hachi-Roku turbo is versatile, from city driving to the circuit.

34.

The dramatic overfenders are original N2-spec parts. Front tires are 205/50-15 and the rears are 225/55-15.

33.

The muffler is TEC’s original stainless-steel unit, with 75 mm piping and a huge 110 mm tailpipe.

The engine itself is basically stock, with an HKS PE1420 turbo. A VVC boost controller is used. Estimated output is 320 hp, with a top speed over 200 km/h.
