This 180SX uses a modified 2.0-liter CA18DET and a VPC to eliminate the airflow meter. It is a high-output build with 720 cc injectors. The owner drives it on the street and also enjoys quarter-mile racing: boost is 1.2 kg/cm² on the street, 1.4 at the strip, and 1.6 on scramble boost. The tires spin too much for an accurate power reading, but it should exceed 400 hp; the transmission keeps failing under the power. Removing the airflow meter reduces intake restriction, though tuning is difficult. Depending on throttle input the engine can stumble, but generally it revs cleanly from idle to over 7,000 rpm.

The engine uses Trust H-beam connecting rods, JUN pistons, and JUN 1N68-degree intake/EX80-degree exhaust cams. Reused parts have been adapted to fit larger valves. The selected turbo is a GT3240, with original piping and exhaust manifold. A Trust front-mount intercooler is followed by an airflow meter; the surge tank is custom-made and the throttle body is a large Infiniti unit. The radiator is stock, with what appears to be a Primera electric fan. Air conditioning and power steering have been removed.

One advantage of the CA engine is that it is harder to break than an SR. With the hydraulic lash system removed, it can rev to 9,000–10,000 rpm, and even high boost does not require resleeving. S14 turbos are now easy to find, so a low-cost CA-powered car can be tuned intelligently and may keep up with many SR cars.

The hood, outer door panels, and trunk lid are fiberglass to reduce weight. An intake opening in the hood reveals the turbo.
