The naturally aspirated CA engine cannot gain five horsepower simply by turning up boost like a turbo car. That makes carburetors especially interesting: paired with head work they can add around 20 hp, and their distinctive sound is a major part of the appeal. Four throttle bodies with four velocity stacks give extremely sharp response. Opening the hood reveals an imposing setup that can rival a large turbo. Head work includes milling and a gasket change, raising compression from 9.5 to 12.1, as well as port-and-step correction. Both intake and exhaust cams are large 272-degree units…

It may feel underpowered on a high-speed circuit, but it is ideal for a short track, mountain roads, or dockside drifting. It can still grip-drive well without especially sticky tires, which is part of the appeal.
PUNCH
Punch S13 Silvia with carburetors
The key to tuning a naturally aspirated S13/PS13!
Choose a fuel system and change the car’s character!
The stock engine makes only about 135 hp, now as underpowered as a commercial van…
A naturally aspirated engine can become a major project if you go as far as mechanical tuning…
Don’t forget that changing the fuel-delivery system can transform how an engine feels. For the CA18, Punch recommends a sports injection package using an Australian Haltech fuel computer. The SR20 also has Ukiya Shōkai’s original FCR carburetor setup. These options can bring out the responsiveness that makes naturally aspirated engines appealing.
This Punch CA18DE sports injection setup retains the stock engine and uses a Haltech computer. At 150,000 yen, it is relatively affordable.
It uses Solex 44 carburetors. Punch made the original intake manifold for fitting them.
The setup favors high-rpm power. The exhaust uses a Trust TR exhaust manifold and an original muffler for good flow. Naturally aspirated tuning provides direct, immediate response. Carburetors also look wonderfully mechanical and add plenty of character.
Ukiya Shōkai’s SR20DE carburetor setup uses FCRs. It bolts onto a stock engine and costs 250,000 yen.
DO
The engine received a careful head-focused tune. Output rose from the stock catalog figure of 135 hp to 156.2 hp.
