This Baku-so Furin-Kazan was built in response to V-OPT's ‘Baku-so’ feature, where Mito Natto Racing's Manabu Orido and Akira Iida set out to conquer Japan in their AE86s. The concept was: ‘We'll take on the Hachiroku with a rotary!’ It is a current-spec build based on a 1980 SA22C, now fitted with a 13B from a Luce. The aero is an aggressive setup reminiscent of the old JSS racing category. The basic idea is naturally aspirated power with carburetors: the engine has side-port work and Weber 48 mm carburetors. It has already run a 1:05 at Tsukuba. Although it currently has side ports, a peripheral-port conversion is being considered for the future—so it will be exciting to see what comes next.

RE Amemiya

Baku-so Furin-Kazan SA22C

The front spoiler and side skirts are original RE Amemiya parts from that era. A universal Amemiya hood duct is also used.

The engine is naturally aspirated with carburetors, based on a 13B from a Luce and modified with side ports. It produces a measured… at 7,000 rpm and … at 6,500 rpm. Compression is 9.7, and standard FD apex seals are used.

This modernized SA has a fresh drivetrain concept: a close-ratio gearbox from a Roadster, a Mazdaspeed clutch, an RE Amemiya flywheel, and an NA8C two-way LSD…

Because a peripheral-port conversion is also being considered for the future, the builder has carefully selected high-quality parts. The tachometer reads to 10,000 rpm, alongside gauges for water temperature, oil temperature, oil pressure, and fuel.

Baku-so RE Furin-Kazan

The carburetors are Weber 48s. Along with an FJ20 fuel pump, the ignition uses a Wako D full kit. The car is set up so it does not feel temperamental like an old car.

RE Amemiya has always shocked people around it—and now it has started something interesting again! So, we are taking a special look at an SA22C that appeared in September 1999…
