About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

SUPER SPORTS SPRING. Super Sports Springs pursue active cornering as well as a lowered stance. ¥36,000–¥40,000 per vehicle set. Spring rates are increased by approximately 200% to control stance during cornering. Data on body rigidity, tire stiffness, and other characteristics are collected for each vehicle to calculate ideal spring rates and improve performance. Repeated tests refine the balance of spring rate and ride height [continued elsewhere].

6.

SUPER FORM SPRING. Super Form Springs seek style and performance through a lower center of gravity. ¥25,000–¥40,000 per vehicle set. A purposeful, nose-down lowered stance. Cold manufacturing enables accurate spring loads, resistance to sagging, and a lightweight design that reduces unsprung weight. Different set loads accommodate vehicle-weight differences caused by grade and equipment. Some applications include bump rubbers. [Caption continues elsewhere.]
