About this issue
The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.
242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

I feel terrible for En-kun in the July issue. Having your car stolen must be awful. As a Skyline fan, I can’t forgive whoever took it. I can’t afford a car yet, but I understand how it feels when something important is stolen. Someone recently peeled a precious sticker off my bicycle; I was down for two days. I really understand how you feel. Hang in there, and get another R… someday. Changing topics, don’t you think more girls are becoming car fans? I wish I had a girlfriend who liked cars. Any high-school girls among Young Version readers…?
Hello, long time no see. My husband suddenly bought his dream car, an Estima Emina 2.4… Limited! It’s used, but everything happened so fast I still can’t believe it. That morning he said he might buy one around summer; at lunch we drove to Yokkaichi and he decided on the spot. I thought we might need a wagon if we had children. My husband loves driving and absolutely refuses to give up his Civic. But I have one worry: my beloved Civic…
I want to go for a drive in my Civic! I’m just hoping he’ll get tired of an automatic. What do you think, Matsugon? If someone who drove a manual switches to an automatic, do they eventually miss the manual? (Naga District, Mie Prefecture) / Matsugon: I mostly drive manuals, but an automatic sometimes feels strange. It is convenient, especially for long trips, but manual is definitely more fun.
My dream is to beat the popular lowriders and hydraulics with a Prelude. I chose this car because it’s an elegant two-door coupe with decent performance, good equipment and condition, a cool look, and a price under ¥500,000. I also do bicycle drifting, so I want to put on a Young Version sticker and surprise everyone. Finally, does anyone know how to modify a bicycle light, such as changing its color?

My husband finally got his dream car…
At least I got my beloved car!
It won’t be sold, but it may sit unused for a while, and that makes me sad.
…but still, I…

My car is a BB4 Prelude. Ideally I’d like a white Type R-style car with a VTEC manual, but I can’t afford that. Realistically, I’ll get a black non-VTEC manual and maybe change the wheels, keeping it understated…

VTEC is a lot of fun, but it could be interesting to make a fast car without VTEC. Keep tuning and improving your driving skills!
