About this issue
The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.
242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

You don’t see this as much in magazines lately, but it still happens: littering by badly behaved street racers. It seems like the worst problem. Why can’t people do the simple thing and take their trash home, sort it, and throw it away properly? Everyone tosses things aside; when there’s nowhere left, will they dump it on national and prefectural roads? Will the roads where we drive become mountains of garbage that we have to dodge? These are basic rules, aren’t they? Rules apply everywhere…
…and speeding along. Then I heard an engine roar and turned to look. It was an AE86 Trueno. I read Young Version and Initial D, but wasn’t very interested until it suddenly appeared right in front of me. What caught my eye was an Initial D Fujiwara Tofu Shop sticker on one side and another Fujiwara tofu shop sticker on the other. I laughed. Matsugon, what do you think? (I was doing the same kind of driving as Initial D.)
You should definitely tell him. Whatever happens, you can’t move forward without finding out. If you keep waiting, you might later discover he has a girlfriend and feel that all the time was wasted. If you really like him, you have to act. I once liked someone at a shop too. He had a girlfriend, but we’re still good friends. I’m glad I confessed because I could move on and eventually like someone else. So be brave—I’m cheering for you!

Let’s think again about the manners of street racers
Hello. I’m a 21-year-old truck driver. I’m writing because I want everyone in the street-racing scene, myself included, to read my thoughts.

An AE86 has to be a “Fujiwara Tofu Shop” car!
On my day off, I was driving my beloved wine-red 180SX…

…street racers. What does “street racer” really mean? Perhaps we should think about it again. (Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture)
What are the mountain roads around you like? Some places keep them clean. We’ll discuss these three issues in next month’s advice column.

Matsugon: Nice! I love that kind of clever twist. We’ve had tofu and konnyaku—maybe gasoline next!? There are some really funny cars. Let’s make a feature gathering funny and unusual cars…

…whether…
But the letters came pouring in!
Advice
I’ve done the same thing with many matters…
I was afraid of being hurt, so I avoided challenges and situations where I might fail. That was easier, of course…
But two years ago, there was someone I couldn’t give up on, so I confessed. She and I started dating…
I have no money or confidence, but I was confident that I could…
Even if you regret it later, at least…
Young Version advice room
After seeing each other a few times, I fell in love.
I’m “Flash Lightning,” an E111 Levin owner with a one-year crush on the mechanic at the dealership that recommended my car. At first I didn’t think much of him, but I want to tell him how I feel; I’ll keep seeing him for inspections and service…
That’s why I wanted Young Version readers to give me advice.
My advice is to tell him you like him. You don’t want to regret never expressing your feelings. Even if it fails, you’ll learn from taking a chance…
But before I knew it, I was doing nothing.
…
…Nothing changes. Whatever the outcome, good or bad, you should make a decision; otherwise nothing can end or begin. Whatever the result…

Advice question
,
You’ll have grown through it. This got serious, but good luck! By the way, I’m not confident in my driving skills either. Sigh.
Hello?
Did you tell him?
