About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

This is a classic light-tuning setup, but this builder also actively tunes cars beyond Toyotas. Their latest demo car is this S15. Let’s check the setup. Starting with power: it is lightly tuned with the distinctive-valve MIG-R muffler, an exposed air cleaner, and an ECU/boost controller. Boost is set to about 0.9. For the suspension, an original height-adjustable GT-SPEC coilover setup is paired with brake pads and 17-inch tires and wheels. The aero section features an original G… .

An original T-wing is fitted, suggesting a purposeful look and strong traction. The test took place at Ebisu Circuit’s west course, unfortunately in fully wet conditions. In such circumstances, a genuinely easy-to-drive car can be driven quickly and steadily, while a poorly balanced car can be extremely dangerous. The test reaffirmed the importance of muffler tuning. Even in those conditions, the Sard S15 delivered enjoyable, powerful performance. Throttle response at partial accelerator was excellent, and the driver could control the car’s attitude with the right foot… [continues].

At low rpm, the exhaust valve closes to maintain back pressure. At mid to high rpm it opens, improving maximum power—allowing these opposing characteristics to work together.
