About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

quite a bit of work. An Apexi air cleaner and HKS exhaust handle intake and exhaust, with a Power FC computer. There is no RB20 application, so an RB25 unit has been adapted and tuned. Boost is increased, but a relatively small GT2530 turbo gives response comparable to a naturally aspirated engine. Front-engine, rear-wheel drive, and six cylinders—that is what matters to me!

46.

I go to the circuit around twice a month. The Evo V's standard engine and suspension are already so well developed that there is little need to modify them. To chase circuit lap times, though, you need suitable equipment. That is why I fitted Öhlins suspension, and I'm particular about its settings. At Tsukuba, for example, I use toe-out so the rear moves slightly through the final corner.

The cockpit is as stripped-out as the exterior suggests. A favorite part is the Axis sports brake pads, which resist fade well.
