About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

Michie Sato handles public relations and advertising at HKS, a company everyone knows. First, what does PR work involve? “I respond to media interviews, take photos of new products, and write copy for Communique, our booklet with HKS news and new-product information.” So YV is always asking her for help, too. She also washes the demo cars before interviews and other events. That sounds like a lot of work... She started in this job because she loves cars and joined an aftermarket-parts manufacturer. As for what she enjoys or has benefited from, she says: “My own car sometimes becomes a test vehicle for developing new products, the parts get tested on it, and it may be used in a photoshoot and appear in a magazine.” It must feel great to see your own car in a magazine!

For our second installment, we’re locking on to a gal who works for a tuning company. Lots of street racers rely on HKS, and we found Michie-chan, who drives a 180SX and loves cars. What kind of work do you do?
