About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

It's an entry-level model that won't put off people installing coilovers for the first time. Pillow-ball mounts may offer a performance advantage, but using the factory upper mounts helps reduce vibration and noise for comfort and also keeps the price as low as possible. The car remains stable with slight understeer at the limit. Even so, the handling is what matters, so I tried it on a circuit. At first, given its suspension design, I expected it to be much too soft on track, but once I pushed it, it felt surprisingly composed…

With the stock suspension, body roll is excessive and understeer or oversteer can appear suddenly. The WS Damper is much more stable, especially because the rear stays planted; even when entering a corner at high speed, the tail is less likely to step out. The balance is mildly understeering, with the front tires sliding first near the limit, so beginners can control it confidently. That also makes it hard to initiate a drift, but this suspension isn't intended for that use, so the setup makes sense. It's a street suspension, yet it performs this well on track—I'd call that a pass. (Eiji Yamada)
