After arriving at the circuit, I would normally be excited and full of energy, but after a two-year break I’m getting nervous. I’m worried whether I can drift well. Our group was B, starting about 30 minutes later, so everyone was busy changing tires and making preparations. My RX-7’s suspension adjustment wasn’t quite right, so I needed extra time. Once we lined up in the pit lane, it was straight out onto the course. Time to begin! I psyched myself up and tried to drift—but it wasn’t working. Why? I used to drift an S13 Silvia, so maybe I hadn’t gotten used to the rotary engine’s characteristics in the RX-7. I wanted to show readers a cool drift, but… After a few laps I gradually improved, though I still wasn’t satisfied. How was everyone else doing? Maybe I was losing! Next time I’ll nail it.

Here’s how the track day went. It was December (this shoot took place on December 22 last year), but the early morning was surprisingly warm—perfect track-day weather.
