●Grades: Type I had nine grades, with interesting choices formed by combining three engines and three suspension systems. For example, RB20DET with HICAS was the top Sport Cruising grade; RB20DE with DUET-SS made Comfort Touring; and RB20E with a multi-link rear suspension made Town Ride. Type II had six grades, but engine and suspension combinations could no longer be chosen independently. Type III had seven grades. A31 four-wheel-drive models were called Attesa, and only Type III was designated SE-4. Note: DUET-SS is a computer-controlled system that automatically varies suspension damping and steering weight. ●Side moldings and protectors: Type I has a side molding across the middle of the door and a protector lower down. On Type II, both the molding and protector sit below the middle of the door. On Type III the side molding is gone, leaving a protector only along the lower door.

Driver’s seat: Types I and II are rather flat and do not provide much lateral support. Type III has larger side bolsters for better support and stability when cornering. ●Passenger seat: Like the driver’s seat, its shape changes between Types I/II and Type III. It reclines, making long trips more comfortable.

47.

Steering wheel: Type I has a three-spoke wheel with a sporty look. Types II and III use four spokes, giving the feel of a luxury sedan.

●Parking brake: this applies to all A31s, but automatic-transmission cars have a foot-operated parking brake. If you want to drift, it needs to be changed to a handbrake.

54.

Type I instrument panel: a conventional layout, with white bands on both the speedometer and tachometer and black markings that are easy to read. ●Type II and later instrument panels: after the minor change, the white bands were removed. The layout remained the same.
