‘So we tried making it silver,’ explains Aoyagi of Wise Factory, familiar to readers of this magazine, who also handled the paintwork. ‘There’s actually a lot of work in it. First, we apply three coats of white with violet in the base. Then we spray our original color, a 50/50 blend of silver pearl and snow-white pearl, and clear-coat it to finish the base. The hard part is applying the checker-pattern Soul Paint over that. We spray the whitish silver only once. If you spray it twice, it becomes plain silver—it’s a very delicate color.’
Captions and page details
Wise’s original white-and-silver blend shifts in tone with the light, beautifully emphasizing the subtle curves of the body.

Maximizing the body lines
Asymmetrical Soul Paint
A checker pattern whose shade changes with the angle of the light
It looks as though silver pearl paint has been applied normally, standing out clearly and darkly on the body. That difference is the essence of Soul Paint.
The subtle gradation looks so pale that it almost melts into the white base coat, preserving the body lines with an exceptionally skillful technique.

OWNER
Mr. Masaaki Shimada
Many may remember the original color of this car: a vivid pink…
Pink.
‘I couldn’t quite give that up, but I wanted a color with shading that would bring out the beautiful body lines…’
Owner Mr. Shimada says he originally had no interest in cars at all. He got hooked after reading a certain tuning magazine, and since then has owned eight RX-7s, including FC and FD models. He fell in love with this FD at the Auto Salon and says he persuaded Mr. Amemiya to sell it to him…
