When building a sport compact, parts from overseas brands are essential. But “overseas” covers products from many countries and categories, from the United States to Italy. In this feature, we introduce major international brands by category in a way that is easy for beginners to follow. JDM is great, but don’t overlook products from around the world!
If you want to go beyond show-car styling and move into performance tuning, the RX-7—known as the “FD”—is a hard-core sports car with a huge following. It remained in production for more than ten years, so there are plenty on the used-car market. Don’t assume it is out of reach: early models can be found for under ¥1 million, putting one within even a beginner’s budget.

This month’s lesson starts with an introduction to overseas brands.
You may have seen the stickers and wondered, “What is that?” This useful feature will answer those questions in one go.
Be sure to read the second installment of our base-car quiz and the driving-technique dojo, too!
