This Levin uses an AE92 4A-GZE in a supercharged setup, which is a fairly familiar swap. But for the intercooler needed with the 4A-GZE, Tsunoshima has used a factory GX71 water-cooled intercooler. ‘It cools really well,’ he says proudly. It apparently isn't difficult to modify the water-cooled intercooler to fit an AE86, so this may be a good way to tune on a budget using donor parts.

What should I do next?

3.

The Hachiroku will never die! Here are some fortunate AE86s that their owners continue to cherish across generations. Each owner has a personal attachment and a purpose for choosing to take the wheel of this car.

Yamashita's preference at first was to keep the car looking almost stock, figuring he could stand out precisely by being understated. That is why he did not strip the interior for weight reduction, leaving it stock, and carefully repaired the bent bodywork. He was particular about a solid body color to make the body lines look sharp.

He repainted it in a color like Ferrari red and was particular about sticker placement, using only clean, understated decals. He has since changed the aero parts, but the car still conveys his point: ‘An AE86 isn't a car you just drive into the ground!’

From the side, you can see how cleanly the bodywork has been finished. The body lines are…

A water-cooled system—and a dedicated radiator—are fitted too. Doesn't all that make the car pretty heavy?
