About this issue

The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.

242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

The high-performance DSM34 digital speed/rev counter captures driving conditions in real time and makes driving more exciting. Newly available in an ultra-compact body with an easy-to-read red LED display. It shows speed and engine rpm with peak hold, and a microcomputer instantly calculates acceleration G and horsepower. It automatically measures 0–100 m, 0–400 m, 0–100 km/h, and 0–200 km/h acceleration times. The DSM340 is a high-tech sports accessory that makes driving performance visible.

36.

Average rpm and average speed display summarize the previous minute of driving and can help gauge economical driving. Speed-limiter cut function (not supported by some vehicles): removes the limiter at 180 km/h for passenger cars or 120 km/h for kei cars; supports simple speed-pulse vehicles only. Settings include cylinder count (3/4/6/8), speed-pulse count (2/4/8/16), tire-diameter correction, vehicle weight, and other details for broad fitment and accurate measurement.

35.

High-precision digital speedometer displays up to 300 km/h and engine speed up to 10,000 rpm in real time. Peak display shows maximum speed and rpm with one touch. Rev-limit indicator gives visual and audible warnings when the set rpm is reached. Optional ultra-bright external warning lamp improves visibility during track driving. Timer functions automatically measure 0–100/200/300/400 m acceleration, speeds at each point, G, and time to 100/200 km/h. A microcomputer calculates power and acceleration/deceleration G in real time from acceleration, vehicle weight, and aerodynamic resistance. (Some OCR in measurement details is uncertain.)
