About this issue
The August 1999 issue of Young Version explores drift setups versus grip tuning through 22 shop demo cars, including S15 Silvias from Mine’s and Kazama Auto. Features cover front-wheel-drive builds taking on high-powered 4WD rivals, choosing a first drift car, and reviving a used AE86 Trueno on a ¥1 million total budget. Suspension fundamentals, engine-oil selection, rotary maintenance, new-parts tests, and reports from Hiroshima and California round out this look at Japan’s late-1990s tuning scene.
242 available scans from Young Version — August 1999, in right-to-left reading order. Japanese OCR and English translation drafts are available throughout. Drafts have not received exhaustive image proofreading; unreadable source remains recorded in the archival data.

Events are held at dedicated drag strips throughout the United States. Participants range from completely stock cars running 17–18 seconds to Pro Stock machines running in the 8s. Events usually span a weekend: three or four practice runs on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday. Entry is typically $40–$60, with 300–400 cars and 2,000–4,000 spectators. Some events take place at casual local tracks; others are NHRA-sanctioned facilities where racers compete in the 5.4-second range. You don’t need a special car to want to try it. General admission is $10–$20, and vendor booths draw plenty of fans. Alongside the GReddy-tuned FD surrounded by fans, GPP supports racers who are active in the scene. The pictured Civic is one to watch this season: a tube-frame chassis with a 624-hp engine. It ran 9.71 seconds and reached 160 mph (256 km/h). The Integra makes 525 hp, running 10.66 seconds at 139 mph (222 km/h).
